How to Choose Sunglasses for Your Face Shape

Sunglasses are not only a fashion staple, they’re also utilitarian, protecting our eyes from harsh ultraviolet rays (and let’s not forget they allow us to discreetly check people out). But like any fashion piece, sunglasses get abused. Aside from the sinful act of wearing sunglasses indoors, many people choose sunglasses that are unflattering to their face. They select sunglasses those frames don’t match their face shape meaning they end up accentuating features that shouldn’t be in the spotlight.

To choose the right sunglasses for your face shape, you need to firstly know what face shape you have. There are four main types of face shapes:

  • Square face shapes
  • Triangle face shapes
  • Round face shapes
  • Oval face shape

Whilst our facial bone structure won’t change over time, our face shape may – either through age or diet, our facial appearances will naturally evolve. Check out the tabs below to see which of the above face shape you have and how you can choose the right sunglasses for your face shape.

What defines a square face shape?

If you have a square shaped face, you’ll have a defined jawline, and an equally broad forehead. You’ll have an angular face and the width of your forehead will similar to that of your jawline.  Your cheekbones might be well-defined, but they don’t draw too much attention and are less visible when compared to the forehead and jawline.

For guys with square-shaped faces, choosing the right sunglasses is about choosing frames that soften angular features: Pick frames that are slightly rounded at the edges Frames should sit high on the face to downplay the sharpness of the jawline Steer clear of geometric and square shaped frames which will only exaggerate your angular face Cat-eye style and classic oval shaped sunglasses will flatter those with square faces

What defines a triangle face shape?

Essentially, triangle face shapes are characterized by a wide forehead and a comparatively narrow jawline. You’ll usually have a longer face and your chin may be more prominent than other parts of your face.

Men with a triangle shaped faces should select glasses that balance their features: Choose frames that don’t sit too high on the face Avoid large frames or frames that square or bold in colour Balance the bottom part of the face by trying frames with a thin rim Cat-eye sunglasses that angle outwards at the top balance the sharpness of the jawline – See more at:

What defines a round face shape?

Those with round faces have soft curves and their face width and length will be similar. Full cheeks and a rounded chin are another features of this face shape. There are few angles with round face individuals.

When choosing frames for sunglasses, men with round faces should follow these guidelines: Downplay the fullness of your face by trying angular and geometric frames Rectangular and square frames will make your face appear longer and thinner Dark colours minimize roundness – like tortoiseshell and black As a rule of thumb, look for frames equal to or slightly wider than the broadest part of your face. Avoid small and short frames.
